Pro Bowl Ballot Review: NFC

I went 28 out of 42. I did make a mistake with the safety position, which would have gotten me to 29. I'll note it when I get there.

Selection My Pick
WR DeSean Jackson Roddy White
Miles Austin Marques Colston
As I mentioned in the entry, there were eight worthy candidates, and I listed Jackson and Austin. They were both good selections.

C Shaun O'Hara Ryan Kalil
Kalil was snubbed. He's been the best center, by far in the NFC.

G Steve Hutchinson Todd Herremans
Hutchinson was named on reputation alone. Herremans solidified the Eagles line once he was healthy. If not Herremans, how about Chris Snee? He's had a better season, as well.

T Bryant McKinnie David Diehl
Jason Peters Levi Brown
Admittedly, Diehl was a weak pick on my part. McKinnie had a strong start, but has been fading fast. Peters wasn't too bad of a selection, as he's really come on as of late. Brown deserved the spot over McKinnie.

DE Julius Peppers Will Smith
Not bad. Peppers has turned it on over the past couple of weeks, while the Smith has been quiet.

DT Darnell Dockett Fred Robbins
Jay Ratliff Mike Patterson
These are good picks. Robbins was weak on my part. Patterson deserves to be in the conversation, but Dockett and Ratliff deserve to be there.

ILB Jonathan Vilma London Fletcher
This is a disgrace. How is Fletcher not ever going to make a Pro Bowl?!?! This guy is a tackling machine, and stays on the field for all three downs.

SS Adrian Wilson Jordin Babineaux
FS Nick Collins
I messed this up. Babineaux should be a free safety, which I neglected a second selection. And Wilson would have been my strong safety pick. That was my mistake. The Collins selection isn't terrible. I can see why voters shied away from Seattle players.

KR DeSean Jackson Percy Harvin
I mentioned both players in the entry, and chose Harvin. Congrats to DeSean Jackson for being selected to two positions- the first time in NFL history.

ST Heath Farwell Michael Robinson
Not a bad pick. I thought Robinson was a more intrincle player for the 49ers, hence his selection.

Pro Bowl Ballot Review: AFC

I was correct in 26 out of 42 possible selections. I'll review the misses below.

Selection My Pick
QB Tom Brady Ben Roethlisberger
Brady made based upon reputation. Big Ben has had the better season.

RB Ray Rice Thomas Jones
Can't dispute this one. He was a player I considered for the final RB spot.

FB LeRon McClain Ahmad Hall
Understand the selection. He's the bigger name, and Rice has had a phenominal season.

WR Brandon Marshall Randy Moss
21 catch game propelled his candidacy, while Moss couldn't recover from the Carolina debacle.

C Nick Mangold Kevin Mawae
Jeff Saturday Kyle Cook
Solid selections. I probably should have chosen one of them over Cook, even though he's worthy.

G Alan Faneca Ben Grubbs
Logan Mankins Justin Smiley
Kris Dielman Chris Kuper
Faneca and Mankins made it based upon reputation. Dielman was fourth on my list. Grubbs and Smiley should have had more consideration.

T Jake Long Michael Roos
Joe Thomas Ryan Diem

Roos deserved it over long. Thomas has been solid, despite Cleveland's woes. Not a bad group.

DE Mario Williams Tamba Hali
I did this to myself. Hali was a linebacker on the ballot, but an end in my stats. Williams is a good pick.

DT Vince Wilfork John Henderson
Wilfork isn't a bad selection. It was a little more reputation-based, but he and Henderson are close.

ILB DeMeco Ryans David Harris
Harris was totally overlooked. Ryans is a fine player, and should go to several more Pro Bowls, but Harris was robbed. He's been the best inside lineback in the game this season.

CB Champ Bailey Jonathan Joseph
Good pick. Both Cincy corners cancelled themselves out, but one was deserving of a selection.

FS Ed Reed Antoine Bethea
Jairus Byrd

Neglected a second selection, though I probably would have gone with Byrd. Reed missed too much time and was name-based. Bethea was the key to the Colts secondary.

Week 16 Game Review- Part 4

Denver at Philadelphia
The Eagles made this game closer than it had to be.  They gained 150 more yards on offense, but gave Denver opportunities to come back in the game.  They allowed the Broncos to go 75% in the red zone, while went just 40%, and they lost the turnover battle at -2.  If they want the number two seed, they have to play better than that against Dallas next week.

Dallas at Washington
Poor Jason Campbell.  He took three more sacks on eight more hits.  That's not good.  And the Redskins were able to pressure Tony Romo with seven hits, but it wasn't enough to throw off this Dallas locomotive.  They gained 180 more yards and went 67% in the red zone.  It was more than enough to defeat this deflated Washington team.

Minnesota at Chicago
This was a wild one.  In the first half, it seemed the Minnesota slump was going to continue for another game.  Than, in the second half, they revved up the engines.  The numbers were in the Vikings direction, except turnovers and pressure.  They went 100% in the red zone, while the Bears went 67%, and gained 60 more yards.  Great game from Jay Cutler.

Week 16 Game Review Part 3

Baltimore at Pittsburgh
This was an evenly matched game.  The pressure and red zone conversions were similar.  Baltimore had 40 more yards on offense, while the Steelers won the turnover battle at +1.  However, Pittsburgh was the beneficiary of numerous calls from the officials.  They had seven fewer penalties called against them, and there were some dubious calls in their favor late in the game.  To their credit, they took advantage and won the game.

St. Louis at Arizona
Another solid showing from NFC West Champion Arizona Cardinals.  They generated more pressure, went 80% in the red zone, while holding the Rams to 0% on their one opportunity, gained 170 more yards, and had a +3 turnover differential.  This was just a tune up prior to the playoffs for Arizona, and they seems in synch.

Detroit at San Francisco
The numbers show that this game could have been closer than the final result.  The pressure was similar and the 49ers gained just 20 more yards on offense.  Detroit went oh-fer in its one red zone chance, but that wasn't the reason they lost.  They had a -5 turnover differential.  And that's very difficult to overcome, especially with the number three quarterback at the helm.

New York Jets at Indianapolis
The end result of this game was not necessarily a surprise.  I thought the Colts starters would do enough to win this one before the backups entered the game.  And they did.  Peyton Manning exited the game with a lead.  In fact, the game was even as an end result.  The pressure, red zone conversions, yards gained were similar.  The difference was the Jets won the turnover battle at +2.  Big win for New York.  This game could loom over the Colts, if they don't win it all.

Week 16 Game Review Part 2

Houston at Miami
I thought this one would be close.  However, the Texans ran up a big lead, and the Dolphins couldn't quite catch up.  Still, both teams were evenly matched.  The red zone and turnovers were even.  Houston's advantage was pressuring the passer- they hit Chad Henne seven times, and yards gained (40 more).  Big win for the Texans.

Jacksonville at New England
The Patriots turned this one into a laugher.  They kept Tom Brady clean, hit David Garrard six times, went 67% in the red zone- in triple the opportunities, gained 190 more yards, and won the turnover battle at +1.  New England looks ready for the playoffs.  Nice win.

Tampa Bay at New Orleans
This was the shocker of the week.  Like most, I assumed the Saints would take their initial loss of the season out on the Bucs.  Obviously, that didn't occur.  The Saints generated slightly more pressure on Josh Freeman, won the turnover battle at +1, and held the Bucs without a red zone touchdown.  Tampa Bay won, because they held the Saints to just 33% in the red zone, and gained 60 more yards on offense.

Carolina at New York Giants
If the previous game was the shocker of the week, then this one was a close second.  The Giants looked like a team primed for a deep playoff run following their game last week against the Redskins, and they came out flat.  Carolina showed their victory over Minnesota was no fluke.  They can win without DeAngelo Williams, but lost Steve Smith for the season following his broken arm.  The Panthers pressured Eli Manning with four sacks on six hits, were 50% in the red zone, gained 100 more yards, and had a +4 turnover advantage.  Perhaps, they should have gone with Matt Moore sooner.  That's two big wins in a row.

Week 16 Game Review- Part 1

So-so week.  9-6 through Sunday.

Buffalo at Atlanta
I figured this would be a blowout, and it was.  The Falcons dominated this one.  They were 50% in the red zone without allowing the Bills score six, gained 210 more yards of offense, and had a +3 turnover advantage.  Buffalo's in shambles, and next week will mercifully end their season.  Atlanta has a lot to look forward to next season.

Kansas City at Cincinnati
Give the Chiefs credit for playing the Bengals tough.  Their downfall was in the red zone and turnovers.  They didn't score a touchdown in their chance, while Cincinnati went 67%, and lost the turnover battle at -1.  They actually gained 20 more yards than the Bengals, and the pressure was even.

Oakland at Cleveland
Breakout the Browns!  That was their third straight win.  How about that?!?!  The yards were even, but overall the Browns dominated the Raiders.  They kept Derek Anderson clean, hit Charlie Frye 11 times, went 40% in the red zone, while allowing nary a touchdown, and had a +2 turnover differential.

Seattle at Green Bay
Another blowout for the Packers.  The hits were even, but they managed more sacks.  Green Bay went 83% in the red zone, allowed the Seahawks to go 25%, gained 120 more yards, and won the turnover battle at -4.  Seattle has officially packed it in for the season.

Week 16 Christmas Game Review

San Diego at Tennessee
The end result of this game was a shock to me. Not the fact the Chargers won, I predicted that. It was the way they won. They dominated a red-hot Tennessee team on the road in a short week. Impressive. Other than pressure, which was similar, San Diego decimated the Titans. They went 83% in the red zone, while just allowing one opportunity, though the Titans capitalized, gained 150 more yards, were +2 in the turnover battle, and held the ball for 19 more minutes. Also, LaDanian Tomlinson looked good running the ball. He doesn't have the breakaway speed any more, but he's still capable of moving the chains. The Chargers looked primed for a long post-season run.

My Christmas presents to good players in need

I give:
Jason Campbell an offensive line and management that cares about him.
Tamba Hali additional playmakers, so he doesn't have to do it all for the Chiefs defense.
Joshua Cribbs a contract that he deserves.

Week 16 NFL Preview- Part 4

Denver at Philadelphia
The return of Brian Dawkins. This could be an entertaining game. These teams appear evenly matched on paper, but have played differently recently. Denver has been middling, at best, since their 6-0 start, while the Eagles have won five straight. The protection is similar, while Philadelphia creates more pressure. Also, the Eagles possess a slight edge at moving the football, and scoring touchdowns in the red zone. The Broncos have a slight edge at yielding yards, and preventing red zone touchdowns. Both teams have committed the same number of turnovers. However, the Eagles are vastly superior at forcing teams to give the ball away. Final score 35-24 Philadelphia.

Dallas at Washington
Talk about two teams with differentiating plans to finish the season. Dallas seems invigorated following their rousing victory over New Orleans this past Saturday, while Washington seems to have packed it in for the season, save Jason Campbell. (I'll have post on him later.) Washington has edges in yards allowed, and scoring andpreventing red zone touchdowns. Dallas protects significantly better, creates more pressure, and takes care of the football. Final score 24-17 Dallas.

Minnesota at Chicago
Does everyone have the whole Brett Favre-Brad Childress tiff out of their system? Good. Chicago protects better, while Minnesota generates greater pressure. The Vikings move the ball more effectively, yield fewer yards, are more proficient scoring in the red zone, prevent more red zone touchdowns, and possess a superior turnover differential. They should win this one to secure the NFC second seed, and the bye that's tagged to it. Final score 34-24 Minnesota.

Week 16 NFL Preview- Part 3

Baltimore at Pittsburgh
Another huge game with playoff implications between these two teams. The numbers are close. Baltimore has much more reliable protection, but creates less pressure on the passer. The yards are about even on either side of the ball, as is defense in the red zone. The Ravens are more efficient at scoring touchdowns in the red zone. Turnovers are about the same, but Baltimore has created 12 more on the season, giving them a huge advantage. Plus, the Steelers defense has been ineffective sans Troy Polamalu. Final score 28-21 Baltimore.

St. Louis at Arizona
A battle of haves and the have nots. Both teams allow similar pressure to their quarterback, while Arizona generates more against their opponent. Each team gives the ball away far too often, but the Cardinals force more turnovers. Arizona's biggest advantages, other than playing against a third-string quarterback, are the efficiency they move the ball, scoring touchdowns, and preventing them in the red zone. I think the Rams will make it a game for the first three quarters, until the Cardinals pull away in the fourth. Final score 31-21 Arizona.

Detroit at San Francisco
This is a blah game. It would have been interesting had Matthew Stafford was healthy enough to play, but, hence, he's on IR. Both teams allow too much pressure on their quarterback, and have gained approximately the same amount of yards. San Francisco yields fewer yards, is more efficient on both sides of the ball in the red zone, and protects the ball better, thus giving them an edge in turnover differential. Final score 24-17 San Francisco.

New York Jets at Indianapolis
There could be a possible upset this week. It really depends how much rest the Colts give to their starters. Both teams generate similar pressure, with the Colts winning the sack battle. Indianapolis protects better, moves the ball more effectively, is more proficient at scoring touchdowns in the red zone, and possesses a vastly superior turnover differential. The Jets have a much stingier defense, allowing 70 fewer yards per game, and are more effective at preventing red zone touchdowns. I think the Colts play their starters enough to win, but it won't be easy. Final score 24-21 Indianapolis.

Week 16 NFL Preview- Part 2

Houston at Miami
This is an intriguing matchup, as its two of the plethora of 7-7 AFC teams squaring off. The Dolphins protect much better, while generating more sacks. Houston has moved the ball more effectively, and has allowed slightly fewer yards per game. Miami is more efficient in the red zone, especially on defense. The Texans possess the superior turnover differential. This should be a close one. Final score 28-27 Miami.

Jacksonville at New England
If he's capable of suiting up, this is Fred Taylor's opportunity to stick it to his former team. (I don't think he will play, because the Patriots will save him for the playoffs. Even if he does, it will be in limited action, and he'll be rusty.) New England is superior in pass protection and generating pressure- which says something, because the Patriots pass rush hasn't been up to their standards this season. The Patriots move the ball more efficiently, while possessing a sturdier defense. Jacksonville is slightly more effective scoring touchdowns in the red zone, while the Patriots hold the edge on the defensive side of the ball. New England also has a more impressive turnover differential. Final score 31-21 New England.

Tampa Bay at New Orleans
A divisional game with teams on either end of the spectrum. New Orelans protects better, generates more pressure, moves the ball much more effectively, superior on both sides of the ball in the red zone, and has a monster edge in turnover differential. The Bucs played well last week, but I think the Saints are seering following their loss to Dallas last week. Final score 41-17 New Orleans.

Carolina at New York Giants
Both teams were dominant in their victories last week. The numbers are very similar, as well. The protection is about even, they've allowed about the same amount of yards per game, and the turnover differential is identical. New York has created more pressure, is slightly more efficient in the red zone, and has moved the ball more effectively. The Panthers have a superior red zone defense. For those of you out there that are fans of smash mouth football, this is the game for you. Final score 21-17 New York.

Week 16 NFL Preview- Part 1

Buffalo at Atlanta
This is going to be one of those games for two teams out of playoff contention. The Falcons have superior protection to the Bills woeful offensive line. Also, they move the ball more effectively, and are more effective in the red zone on either side of the ball. Buffalo generates more pressure, and is better in the turnover department. Considering the injuries in Buffalo's secondary and that they strongly considering starting backup quarterback Brian Brohm, the Falcons should win this one and big. Final score 31-14 Atlanta.

Kansas City at Cincinnati
These are two teams going in different directions. The Chiefs just had the third highest individual rushing total in NFL history put on them. And if that wasn't bad enough, they allowed not one, but two kick returns for scores. On the other hand, the Bengals are coming off an emotional loss against a talented San Diego team. Cincinnati protects better, creates more pressure, moves the ball more effectively, is more proficient on both sides of the ball in the red zone, and has a superior turnover differential. That spells a blowout. Final score 41-10 Cincinnati.

Oakland at Cleveland
Both teams are coming off exciting victories from a week ago. However, the Browns will go on sans quarterback Brady Quinn, who's out for the remainder of the season. Derek Anderson will take his place. And Oakland may or may not go with Channing Frye, depending on his injury. The Browns protect better and create more quarterback pressure. The yards are about even, with Oakland allowing fewer on the defensive side of the ball. The Raiders are slightly more proficient in red zone offense, while the opposite is true in red zone defense. Both teams have given up the same number of turnovers, but the Raiders have caused more. It should be a close game, but the Raiders should pull it out. Final score 23-20 Oakland.

Seattle at Green Bay
Another tale of two teams going in two directions. Seattle seems to have packed it in for the season, while the Packers are in contention for a playoff spot. Both teams are awful at protecting the quarterback. Seattle has generated more pressure, but the Packers have more sacks. Green Bay is much more proficient at moving the ball football, and has given up 60 fewer yards per contest. The Packers are more effective in the red zone on offense, while the Seahawks are more efficient on defense. Green Bay's greatest edge is in turnover differential. They should win this one handily. Final score 35-21 Green Bay.

Rookie WR's

One overlooked part of this season has been the play of the rookie WR's.  And the impact hasn't been felt from just the first rounders.  Many later round picks have made their mark on this season.  This bodes well for not only the league, which has become pass-dominant, but for fantasy owners.  I'm sure some of you out their have taken advantage of the gold in the list below.  I'll rehash each round below with the overall number the player was drafted.

Round 1
7. Darrius Heyward-Bey Oak
10. Michael Crabtree SF
19. Jeremy Maclin Phi
22. Percy Harvin Min
29. Hakeem Nicks NYG
30. Kenny Britt Ten

Of this group, only Heyward-Bey has been a disappointment.  Crabtree leads his team in receiving, despite missing the first six games, due to his hold-out.  Maclin has stepped in for an injured Kevin Curtis, and became a frequent target of Donovan McNabb's prior to his foot injury.  Harvin has been an all around revelation, and Brett Favre's go-to-guy.  Nicks is a momentum changer for the Giants.  Britt has flourished, since Vince Young has become the starter in Tennessee.

Round 2
36. Brian Robiskie Cle
50. Mohamed Massaquoi Cle

Only two in this round- I don't count Pat White, since he's a quarterback.  Robiskie has yet to have made an impact.  Massaquoi is a star in the making, though he has to hold on to a few more passes.  With better quarterback play, he could become the best receiver in the draft class.

Round 3
82. Derrick Williams Det
83. Brandon Tate NE
84. Mike Wallace Pit
85. Ramses Barden NYG
87. Patrick Turner Mia
91. Deon Butler Sea
99. Juaquin Iglesias

Wallace is the player that stands out here.  He's already developed into a solid number three receiver for the Super Bowl Champs, and gives them another deep threat.  Butler has had more passes thrown his way the last couple of weeks, with minimal results, but has potential.

Round 4
107. Mike Thomas Jax
108. Brian Hartline Mia
124. Louis Murphy Oak
127. Austin Collie Ind

All four of these players have made names for themselves this season.  In fact, they've been more productive than the third rounders, thus far.  Thomas and Hartline appear to be headed for solid careers as complementary receivers.  Murphy is making up for the Heyward-Bey selection, and has number one wide receiver potential.  Collie is apart of the Peyton Manning machine, and fits in well in the slot.

Round 5
140. Johnny Knox Chi
141. Kenny McKinley Den
144. Jarrett Dillard Jax
160. Brooks Foster StL

Only Knox has done something this year.  He's a speedster, who can burn defenses deep.

Round 6
175. Quinten Lawrence KC
194. Brandon Gibson Phi
206. Dominique Edison Ten

Gibson has been traded for defensive help for the Eagles, and is blossoming with the extended playing time that comes with playing with the Rams.

Round 7
224. Demetrius Byrd SD
229. Manuel Johnson Dal
232. Julian Edelman NE
233. Sammie Stroughter TB
243. Marko Mitchell Was
254. Derek Kinder Chi
255. Freddie Brown Cin
256. Tiquan Underwood Jax

Edelman and Stroughter are the players here.  Edelman is a Wes Welker cloner.  Stroughter had a couple of very productive weeks when Antonio Bryant was injured, but he's on the shelf with a season ending injury.

Week 16 Christmas Night Preview

San Diego at Tennessee
I'm excited for this one.  Both teams are amongst the hottest teams in the league.  Tennessee is better at the lines, as they've done a more effective job at protecting the passer, and create more pressure on the quarterback.  San Diego's superior with turnover differential.  They've also have higher red zone percentages on either side of the football, but have had many more opportunities.  The yards are about even, with the Titans allowing 30 more yards per game.  This will be a close one, and either team can win it.  Final score 24-21 San Diego.

Week 15 Game Review- Part 4

Tampa Bay at Seattle
This was a tale of two bad teams.  The Seahawks had more yards of offense, but went -3 in turnover differential and scored nary a red zone touchdown.  Tampa Bay took advantage of the turnovers, and blew out a banged up, bad team.

Minnesota at Carolina
All the talk this week will be about the spat between Brett Favre and Coach Brad Childress, but it should be about Carolina dominating this one.  They hit Favre 10 times, gained 160 more yards, +2 in the turnover differential, held the ball for 16 more minutes, and went perfect in the red zone.  Great game from the Panthers, as they exposed some potential weaknesses for Minnesota as the playoffs approach.

New York Giants at Washington
I totally swung and missed on this one.  The Giants flat out decimated the Redskins.  Not a good start for the Bruce Allen era in DC.  New York had 80 more yards of offense, hit Jason Campbell a whopping 12 times, went +3 in the turnover battle (including a pick-six), and went 75% in the red zone.  They allowed two red zone touchdowns, so its still a concern for the Giants.

Week 15 Game Review- Part 3

Oakland at Denver
This game was evenly matched.  The yards were about even.  Denver created more pressure, but the Raiders were able to get more sacks.  The Broncos lost due to going 25% in the red zone.  Oakland won, despite losing the turnover battle at -2, and went just 33% in the red zone.

Cincinnati at San Diego
Game of the week.  The pressure was even.  Credit Cincinnati for playing well in an emotional game.  They gained 40 more yards, and went +1 in the turnover battle, but they converted just 25% of their red zone chances into scores.  On the other side of the ball, the Chargers went 50% in the red zone.

Green Bay at Pittsburgh
Another exciting game on the docket.  There was no pass defense whatsoever, as despite the pressure generated, neither team turned the ball over.  Both teams converted over 60% of their red zone opportunities into touchdowns.  The difference was the yardage, as the Steelers gained 100 more yards in offense.

Week 15 Game Review- Part 2

Houston at St. Louis
The Texans should have won this game by a higher score.  They kept Matt Schaub clean, while pressuring Keith Null, had 180 more yards, but went just 25% in the red zone.  Give the Rams credit, they went 50% in the red zone and maintained an even turnover battle.

Atlanta at New York Jets
This was an ugly game to watch.  The Jets should have won this one.  They had over 70 more yards of offense, and kept Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez, his touchdown not withstanding, in check.  However, they went oh for three in the red zone, and lost the turnover battle at -3.

San Francisco at Philadelphia
The Eagles dominated this one.  They gained 160 more yards of offense, went 60% in the red zone, allowed zero hits on Donovan McNabb, and won the turnover battle at +2.  Philadelphia also sacked Alex Smith three times, and allowed only 33% conversion rate in the red zone.  Big win for the Birds.

Chicago at Baltimore
Jay Cutler imploded again, and the Ravens took advantage.  Baltimore had 120 more yards, went 75% in the red zone, and had a +5 turnover differential.  Total domination by the Ravens.

Week 15 Review- Part 1

Not a great week.  At worst, I'll be .500.  I missed more close games than normal.

New England at Buffalo
This was a evenly matched game.  Pressure was even in terms of hits.  The Patriots generated more sacks.  Yards were about even and the turnovers were identical.  New England won this one because they were more effective in the red zone, 67% compared to 33%.

Arizona at Detroit
Despite some shoddy quarterback play, the Lions played a very competitive game.  The hits and turnovers were even.  The difference was yardage and the red zone.  Arizona gained 60 more yards and were perfect in the red zone, while the Lions went just 33%.

Miami at Tennessee
I figured this one was going to be close, and I went with Miami, due to the injury Vince Young suffered last week.  Miami dominated in field position with 100 more total yards, and limited the Titans to just one failed red zone conversion.  However, they hurt themselves by going just 40% in the red zone, and lost the turnover battle at -2.

Cleveland at Kansas City
This was a wild one.  Two huge returns from Joshua Cribbs- the best special teams player in the NFL.  Those return touchdowns were the difference in the ball game.  The pressure was even.  Each team had a 50% conversion rate in the red zone.  The Chiefs had a 20 yard advantage in yardage, and won the turnover war at +2.

Week 15 Saturday Review

Dallas at New Orleans
I don't know what shocked me more: New Orleans losing the ball game or Dallas winning in December.  Both teams pressured well, but the Cowboys dominated this one.  They were more effective in the red zone, gained 60 more yards of offense, went +3 in turnover differential, and held the ball for 13 more minutes.  Huge win for Dallas.

Week 15 NFL Preview- Part 4

Tampa Bay at Seattle
The numbers illustrate that this is more of an even matchup than previously realized. Tampa Bay protects better, but Seattle generates more pressure. The Seahawks move the ball slightly more efficiently, but have converted fewer red zone touchdowns than the Bucs. Seattle was more efficient defensively in the red zone, and possesses a superior turnover differential. Final score 24-21 Seattle.

Minnesota at Carolina
Minnesota has all but a couple of victories separating themselves for the second my in the NFC. Carolina, on the other hand, is on the outside looking in at the playoff picture. The Panthers protect better, but the Vikings generate more pressure. Minnesota is superior in moving the ball, converting red zone chances, preventing red zone touchdowns, and has a greater turnover differential. Final score 31-17 Minnesota.

New York Giants at Washington
Another tough NFC East game for the Giants. Unlike what their record indicates, this Redskins team is not a bunch of pushovers. The Giants protect much better, but the Skins possess a more consistent pass rush. New York moves the ball more efficiently, and has a better turnover differential. On the other hand, Washington is much more effective in the red zone, on both sides of the ball. This should be a close game. I'm going with the Redskins, but the Giants definiely could win it. Final score 18-17 Washington.

Week 15 NFL Preview- Part 3

Oakland at Denver
The Broncos have had a surprisingly good season. I expect Knowshon Moreno to have a good game on the ground against Oakland's porous run defense, sans Correll Buckhalter. Denver protects better, generates more pressure, moves the ball more efficiently, allows fewer yards, and has a superior turnover differential. Final score 28-10 Denver.

Cincinnati at San Diego
This is the game of the week. Both teams are vying for the second seed in the AFC. This should be an evenly matched game. Each team protects just as well as the other. Cincinnati creates more pressure and is slightly more effective on both sides of the ball in the red zone. The Chargers move the ball more efficiently and possesses a superior turnover differential. Final score 24-23 San Diego.

Green Bay at Pittsburgh
Another interesting game. However, Pittsburgh seems to have wrapped up the season a couple of weeks back following the injury to Troy Polamalu. The Steelers protect better, but the Packers generate more consistent pressure. Pittsburgh is much more effective on both sides of the ball in the red zone, but Green Bay has a greater turnover differential and has moved the ball with a slight edge. Final score 24-21 Green Bay.

Week 15 NFL Preview- Part 2

Houston at St. Louis
The Texans should win this one big time.  They create more pressure, move the ball more efficiently, better turnover differential, and much more effective in the red zone.  The Rams protect better, but they haven't practiced all week, due to a swine flu scare.  Final score 38-7 Houston.

Atlanta at New York Jets
This should be a pretty good game.  Each team protects well and have about the same turnover rate.  The Falcons score more touchdowns in the red zone, while the Jets are better at preventing them.  New York has the biggest advantage, allowing 110 fewer yards per game.  Final score 20-13 New York.

San Francisco at Philadelphia
Another potentially good game.  The 49ers generate more pressure and slightly more effective in the red zone.  Philadelphia protects better, moves the football more efficiently, and have a much better turnover differential.  Plus, San Francisco is coming off a short week, and traveling to the East Coast for a one o'clock game.  Final score 27-17 Philadelphia.

Chicago at Baltimore
Other than protection, the Ravens are the vastly superior team.  They move the ball more effectively, are better on both sides of the ball in the red zone, and have a superior turnover differential.  Final score 21-16 Baltimore.

Week 15 NFL Preview- Part 1

New England at Buffalo
Could this be the first game New England wins on the road in the United States?  It certainly looks good.  The Patriots protect much better, while the Bills generate more pressure.  New England has distinct advantages in moving the football, scoring in the red zone, and turnover differential.  The Patriots buck their road trend woes this week.  Final score 34-21 New England.

Arizona at Detroit
Both teams were rolled last week.  Protection slightly favors Arizona, while they generate more pressure.  Each team has a negative turnover differential.  Arizona moves the ball more efficiently, are much more effective on both sides of the ball in the red zone.  The Cardinals should win this one.  Final score 28-10 Arizona.

Miami at Tennessee
This is a very interesting matchup.  Both teams are relatively even.  Their turnover differential is identical.  Tennessee protects much better, and moves the ball more effectively.  Miami is more efficient in the red zone on offense and defense.  I like the way both teams have played in recent weeks, but the injury to Vince Young is concerning to me.  The Dolphins win, but in a tough one.  Final score 21-20 Miami.

Cleveland at Kansas City
The blah game of the week.  Both teams are destined for top ten selections.  The Browns protect better, create more pressure, and defend the red zone better.  Kansas City can move the ball more effectively, score better in the red zone, and have a better turnover differential.  Cleveland has the advantage of extra time to prepare for this game.  The Chiefs advantage is they don't have the Mike Holmgren situation hanging over their heads.  Final score 13-10 Cleveland.

WR- Roy Williams 35-40

RB- Reggie Bush 33-38
WR- Marques Colston 6-12
WR- Devery Henderson 25-30
WR- Robert Meachem 31-36
TE- Jeremy Shockey 8-12

Week 15 Saturday Preview

Dallas at New Orleans
This game is monumentally larger for the Cowboys, than for the Saints.  They need this game to assist in exorcising their December demons.  New Orleans is better at protecting the quarterback, while Dallas is slightly better at pressuring the passer.  The Saints move the ball more efficiently, are more effective at scoring in the red zone touchdowns, and superior at forcing turnovers, with a much greater turnover differential.  Unfortunately for Dallas fans, it's another long December.  Final score 34-24 New Orleans.

Week 15 Thursday Review

Indianapolis at Jacksonville
What a game!  Another fourth quarter comeback for the undefeated Colts.  Both teams only had one turnover and went perfect in the red zone.  In fact the Jaguars were better in that facet, because they converted touchdowns on two additional opportunities.  They also kept the ball away from the vaunted Indy offense for an 11 additional minutes.  Indianapolis won because, they moved the ball slightly more effectively, and kept Peyton Manning clean, while creating pressure on David Garrard.

Week 15 Thursday Fantasy Plays

As I mentioned in a previous post, I think the Colts stars are going to go in this one. I wouldn't worry until next week. That said, I would have to give a slight downgrade to their players, due to the possibility of them playing in limited action. I'll name the players and give a range where I think they'll potentially fall this week.

Indianapolis
QB- Peyton Manning 3-7
RB- Joseph Addai 15-20
WR- Reggie Wayne 4-8
WR- Pierre Garcon 35-40
WR- Austin Collie- just outside the top 40
TE- Dallas Clark 4-8

Jacksonville
QB- David Garrard 15-20
RB- Maurice Jones-Drew 4-8
WR- Mike Sims-Walker- just outside the top 40, due to his calf injury, which caused him to miss last week
WR- Torry Holt 35-40
TE- Marcedes Lewis 15-20

Week 15 Thursday Night Preview

Indianapolis at Jacksonville
This is an interesting matchup. The Jaguars typically play up to the Colts, and seem to play very well at home. Indianapolis has already wrapped up home field advantage throughout the playoffs, and has publicly stated that they will rest nicked up starters. I think the Colts will play their stars this week, but begin phasing them off the field over the next several weeks. In terms of numbers, Indianapolis is better at protection, generating pressure, converting red zone chances into touchdowns, defending the red zone, and are better at generating turnovers. It will be tight, but the Colts will continue their undefeated streak. Final score 24-21 Indianapolis.

Week 14 Game Review-Part 4

I opened and closed the week with losses, but swept Sunday.

San Diego at Dallas
The Dallas December free fall is in full swing.  This was a game that they could have easily won, as the numbers sway into their favor.  The yards and red zone opportunities and percentages were virtually identical.  The Cowboys created slightly more pressure on Philip Rivers, and went +1 in turnover differential.  Another a nice win by the Chargers, who have a punchers chance at taking the AFC crown in the playoffs.

Philadelphia at New York Giants
This was the most exciting game of the week.  The Giants had their opportunities, as they went 75% in the red zone, gained 140 more yards of offense, and held the ball for 10 additional minutes.  However, the Eagles were able to pressure Eli Manning to the tune of eight hits, while protecting Donovan McNabb.  They also went 60% in the red zone, and had a +3 turnover advantage.

Arizona at San Francisco
Big win for the 49ers.  They flat out dominated a talented Arizona team.  San Francisco sacked Warner four times, went 67% in the red zone, gained 80 more yards, held the ball for 14 more minutes, and caused a whopping seven (Yes. Seven) turnovers.  Their turnover differential was +5.  The 49ers most likely won't make the playoffs, but this is the type of game a young team can build upon.

Week 14 Game Review- Part 3

Detroit at Baltimore
This had blowout written all over it prior to the game, and the Ravens followed the blueprint.  They kept Joe Flacco clean, while moderately pressuring Daunte Culpepper.  Baltimore more had whopping eight red zone trips with a 50% conversion rate, gained 320 more yards, and were +1 in the turnover battle.

Seattle at Houston
The Texans opened the game with a burst and didn't look back.  They pressured Matt Hasselbeck, while protecting Matt Schaub.  Despite going -1 in turnover differential, they gained 140 more yards, went 40% in the red zone, and held the Seahawks to 33% in their chances.

St. Louis at Tennessee
Another blowout.  Big loss if Vince Young can't go next week.  The Titans totally dominated this one.  They had 200 more yards, went +4 in turnover differential, but just went 40% in the red zone, so they could have won by a wider score.

Washington at Oakland
I thought the Redskins would have won in a tight game, but Bruce Gradkowski's injury put the end to that one.  Both teams generated tons of pressure on the opposing quarterback.  Washington won because they went perfect in their four chances in the red zone.

Week 14 Game Review- Part 2

Cincinnati at Minnesota
I thought this game was going to be closer than it ended up.  First, Carson Palmer has to throw for more than 94 yards, if the Bengals want to advance deep into the playoffs.  Both teams were able to generate pressure on the passer, and were even in the turnover battle.  Minnesota had 110 more yards of offense, and went 60% in the red zone with three more opportunities.  Big win for the Vikings

Carolina at New England
A lot of people are going to get caught up in the whole Randy Moss saga.  Yes, he had a terrible game, and took a few plays off.  But does anyone realize that the Patriots actually won the game?  The Pats kept Tom Brady clean, while placing moderate pressure on Matt Moore.  And in spite of going -3 in the turnover department, New England went 67% in the red zone, and gained 70 more yards of offense.

New York Jets at Tampa Bay
This was an all-out drubbing by the Jets, and they should have won by more.  They were able to pressure Josh Freeman, which led to their +2 turnover advantage, and allowed just 124 yards of offense.  The Jets went just 33% in the red zone, so their margin of victory could have been wider.

Miami at Jacksonville
This was a hard-hitting game.  Both teams were able to pressure the quarterback.  However, the Dolphins kept Jacksonville in this one with a -3 turnover differential.  Miami went perfect in the red zone, while holding the Jaguars to 50%, gained 130 more yards of offense, and held the ball for 10 additional minutes.

Week 14 Game Review- Part 1

I went perfect on my calls on Sunday, bringing my record for the week 14-1.

New Orleans at Atlanta
First, lets give Atlanta credit for fighting until the end of this one without several key players.  The Falcons had a shot in this one, as they were even with the Saints in terms of yardage.  However, New Orleans went 50% in the red zone, while Atlanta went 25%, had a +1 turnover edge, and held the ball for 14 additional minutes.  Three more to go for the Saints.

Green Bay at Chicago
This was a tight game, but didn't necessarily had to be.  Both teams were able to pressure the opposing quarterback.  The Packers had 60 more yards of offense and two more red zone opportunities.  However, they went just 25% on those chances, hence leading to a seven point game.

Denver at Indianapolis
Kudos to Brandon Marshall for breaking the single game receiving record with 21 grabs, and to the Colts for breaking the all-time consecutive regular season victories record.  Denver had its opportunities to steal this one.  They had forty more yards of offense, the same number of red zone chances, and were +2 in turnover differential.  The Colts won because they were perfect in the red zone, while holding the Broncos to 50%.

Buffalo at Kansas City
I figured this was going to be a tight lower scoring game.  The surprising part was the Chiefs gaining 80 more yards of offense than the Bills.  Buffalo won, because they were able to pressure Matt Cassel.  This led to their +1 turnover differential, and two additional red zone chances.  The Bills should do better than 25%.  At least on defense, they didn't allow a Kansas City opportunity to convert into six.

Week 14 NFL Preview- Part 4

San Diego at Dallas
Another matchup on the slate between two division leaders. The Chargers are streaking, while Dallas hit a roadblock in New York last week. San Diego protects better, is more effective in red zone, and has a much higher turnover differential. Dallas generates more pressure, plays better red zone defense, and has moved the ball more effectively. It will be close, but that gap in turnover differential sways the game in the Chargers direction. Final score 28-20 San Diego.

Philadelphia at New York Giants
This is the game of the week. It can't get any better than an NFC East matchup in December. Can it? The yards gained and allowed between these teams are even, red zone offense is similar, and in terms of hits, protection and pressure is almost identical. The Eagles have more sacks on the season, while the Giants have allowed fewer sacks. Philadelphia is much more effective defensively in the red zone, and not only create more turnovers, but protect the ball better. Final score 31-24 Philadelphia.

Arizona at San Francisco
A big division matchup here. The 49ers are fighting for an outside shot at the playoffs, while the Cardinals are attempting the wrap up the division. The numbers all favor Arizona. They protect much better, average 70 more yards per game, and more effective in the red zone. It will be a game with the Cardinals pulling away in the second half. Final score 35-24 Arizona.

Week 14 NFL Preview- Part 3

Detroit at Baltimore
The Lions are coming into this one sans Matthew Stafford, against a motivated Baltimore team. Their line is porous, allowing too many hits, while the Ravens haven't generate the pressure they have in the past, I can them getting to Daunte Culpepper a lot on Sunday. The Ravens are more effective on both sides of the ball in the red zone, and protect the ball much better. Final score 31-13 Baltimore.

Seattle at Houston
This is a pretty even matchup. Both teams do a horrible job of protecting the quarterback and have similar turnover differentials. Houston is more proficient in the red zone, especially on the offensive side. Matt Schaub is banged up for the Texans. I think it will be close, but the Texans should prevail. Final score 27-21.

St. Louis at Tennessee
Give both of these teams credit. The Rams have been playing competitive football for the past couple of weeks, and the Titans were rolling until last week's loss to the Colts. The Titans are much better at protecting the passer, and generating pressure. This is yet another game that will be closer than what others would expect, especially with Vince Young nicked up. Final score 24-17 Tennessee.

Washington at Oakland
With all due respect to these fan bases, this is a blah game. Another game to determine where in the top ten these two teams are drafting. The Redskins have played terrific defense all season long, but the offense hasn't done much until the last couple of games. In fact, Washington has allowed the fewest red zone touchdowns all season. Bruce Gradkowski has given the Raiders a spark, but have just nine red zone touchdowns on the season. Final score 21-20 Washington.

Week 14 NFL Preview- Part 2

Cincinnati at Minnesota
Two division leaders from opposing conferences make this an interesting matchup. Both teams pressure the quarterback well, are efficient in the red zone, and create turnovers. The Bengals protect better, but the Vikings move the ball more effectively and protect it better. I think this will be close game, and either team can win it. Final score 21-20 Minnesota.

Carolina at New England
Rematch of the Patriots second Super Bowl win. Both teams generate about the same amount of pressure, and have allowed a similar number of quarterback hits. That's about where the similarities end. The Panthers are much more efficient in the red zone on both sides of the ball, but the Patriots have had more opportunities on offense and fewer on defense. Both of which is a good thing. Also, New England moves the ball more effectively and does a much better job at protecting it. Final score 31-21 New England.

New York Jets at Tampa Bay
The Jets suffered yet another injury last week- to quarterback Mark Sanchez, who's not playing this week. The Bucs are coming off a tough loss where Josh Freeman threw five picks. This is going to be a much closer game than most suspect. New York protects better, play better red zone defense, and has allowed 90 fewer yards per game. Tampa Bay is more effective scoring in the red zone, and despite Freeman's poor showing last week, has a better turnover differential. I'll go with the Jets, because of the additional time to prepare for this game. But either team can win it. Final score 16-13 New York.

Miami at Jacksonville
Another battle for Florida game for the Dolphins. Both teams are coming off of huge divisional wins last week. This should be a competitive game, but Miami should end up winning it. They protect and generate pressure much better, and are more effective in the red zone. The yards and turnover differential are about the same, so the game should be close. Final score 28-24 Miami.

Week 14 NFL Preview- Part 1

New Orleans at Atlanta
The Saints are coming off a thrilling overtime victory over Washington, while the Falcons are limping into this one off an embarrassing defeat from Philadelphia. New Orleans protects and pressures better, as well as more effective in the red zone. They also have a significant turnover edge on the season. I don't see how the Falcons can win this one. Their pass defense is porous, which plays into the Saints strength, and they'll probably be without Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, and two-three starting offensive linemen. Final score 38-10 New Orleans.

Green Bay at Chicago
Boy, the wind has dropped from the sails of the Bears ship. They barely beat a weak St. Louis last week. Jay Cutler has been a turnover machine, especially in the red zone, which coincidently the Packers have a major edge. Plus, the Bears are most likely playing without game changer Devin Hester. Although the Packers are on a short week, I expect them to win it. Final score 28-17 Green Bay.

Denver at Indianapolis
This is an intriguing matchup. The Colts can lock up home field advantage with a win, while the Broncos can increase their playoff odds by pulling off the upset. Both teams protect the quarterback well, and pressure the opposing passer. They also create turnovers, while protecting the football. The big difference is the red zone, as Denver is middling in those situations, while Indianapolis is one of the top teams in converting their chances into touchdowns. It will be close, but the Colts will pull it out. Final score 28-24 Indianapolis.

Buffalo at Kansas City
The opposite of the previous preview. This game is about who will have the higher pick come April. Both teams are lousy at protecting the passer, and have allowed over 50% conversion rate against in the red zone. They also have positive turnover differentials. Kansas City is more effective in the red zone, but the Bills are far more effective at pressuring the passer. I see a lot of three and outs in this game with the Bills on top. Final score 17-10 Buffalo.

Week 14 Thursday Night Review

Pittsburgh at Cleveland
That sound everyone just heard was the collective groan from the greater Pittsburgh area. Their title defense is shot following this beat down from a formally one win team. The Browns dominated this one. They gained 40 more yards and pressured Ben Roethlisberger. Not only did they manage to sack him eight times, but he took 12 hits overall. Despite the fact the Browns converted just 33% of their red zone chances into touchdowns, they still won. Great game for Cleveland fans.

Week 14 Fantasy Plays

I haven't updated my rankings for the week.  Based on the Thursday night game, here's the range I'll rank each player.

Steelers players
QB Ben Roethlisberger 5-10
RB Rashard Mendenhall 4-8
WR Hines Ward- no ranking- I don't think he'll play.
WR Santonio Holmes 20-25
WR Mike Wallace- just outside the top 40
TE Heath Miller 4-8

Cleveland players
QB Brady Quinn- just outside the top 20
RB Jerome Harrison 30-40
WR Mohamed Massaquoi 35-40
WR Josh Cribbs- just outside the top 40

Week 14 Thursday Night Preview

Pittsburgh at Cleveland
At first glance, this game should be a blowout.  However, the Browns have showed signs of life, while the Steelers are floundering over a four game losing streak.  Also, the numbers are closer for protection, pressure, and turnovers.  The Steelers average 130 more yards per game, while the Browns allow 100 more per game, and Pittsburgh is more effective in the red zone, offensively and defensively.  Final score 24-14 Pittsburgh.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC K

1. David Akers Phi- Leads the NFC with 86.7 conversion rate.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC K

1. Nate Kaeding SD- leads the AFC with 89.3% conversion rate

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC P

1. Andy Lee SF- Leads the NFC with a 48.3 average.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC P

1. Shane Lechler Oak- This isn't even close.  He's one of the best punters ever, having one of the best season's ever with 51.5 yard per punt average.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC Special Teamer

1. Michael Robinson SF

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC Special Teamer

These players are tough to rate.

1. Kassim Osgood SD

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC KR

1. Percy Harvin Min- This was a tough decision.  He's the best kickoff return man in the NFC, while DeSean Jackson is the best punt returner.  I went with Harvin, because he's had more return scores on the season.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC KR

1. Joshua Cribbs Cle- Most underrated player in the NFL in my opinion.  The Browns are first in the league in punt return yards.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC SS

1. Jordin Babineaux Sea- Key stats: 86 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 1 forced fumble.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC SS

I inadvertently placed Brian Dawkins in the free safety category.  He should be a strong safety.  This one I'll show the free safety.

1. Antoine Bethea Ind- Key stats: 78 tackles (third for S in AFC) and 4 interceptions (tied for first).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC FS

1. Darren Sharper NO- Key stats: 8 interceptions (first) and 13 pass breakups (first).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC FS

All numbers are S based.

1. Brian Dawkins Den- Key stats: 83 tackles (tied for second), 9 pass breakups (tied for third), and 3 fumble recoveries (first).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC CB

1. Charles Woodson GB- He's arguably the Defensive MVP this season.  He has 7 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles, 2 sacks, and 58 tackles.

2. Asante Samuel Phi- Tied for NFC lead for corners in interceptions, and teams have to game plan around him.

3. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Arz-  He leads all NFC players with 18 pass breakups.  Plus, he has 3 picks to boot.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC CB

Numbers are CB only.

1. Darrelle Revis NYJ- Everyone knows of his shutting down opposing number one receivers.  He's also tied for second in the AFC with 5 picks.  His 23 pass breakups are far and away in first in the league.

2. Nnamdi Asomugha Oak- His stats are low because no teams dare to throw to his side of the field.

3. Jonathan Joseph Cin- Both Cincy corners are having great seasons, so picking one is difficult.  Joseph has 1 more pick and 2 more tackles on the season.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC ILB

1. Patrick Willis SF- Key stats: 123 tackles (first in NFC), 3 sacks (tied for 14th), and 2 interceptions (tied for third)

2. London Fletcher Was- Key stats: 109 tackles (third).  Jon Beason and Curtis Lofton were strongly considered here, however Fletcher has been passed over from the Pro Bowl for over a decade.  And if anyone deserves a career selection, it's him.  Mind you, this sentiment is coming from an Eagles fan.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC ILB

1. David Harris NYJ- Key stats: 105 tackles (first in AFC), 5.5 sacks (tied for ninth), and 2 forced fumbles (tied for seventh)

2. Ray Lewis Bal- Key stats: 99 tackles (third) and 2 forced fumbles (tied for seventh)

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC OLB

1. DeMarcus Ware Dal- Key stats: 9 sacks (first in NFC) and 3 forced fumbles (tied for second)

2. Manny Lawson SF- Key stats: 5.5 sacks (third), 3 forced fumbles (tied for second), 55 tackles (tied for 31st)

3. Lance Briggs Chi- Key stats: 83 tackles (11th for all LB's, first for OLB's) and 2 sacks (tied for 20th)

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC OLB

All stats are LB only.

1. Elvis Dumervil Den- Key stats: 15 sacks (first in AFC) and 3 forced fumbles (tied for third).

2. Brian Cushing Hou- Key stats: 102 tackles (second), 3 interceptions (first), and 2 forced fumbles (tied for fourth).

3. James Harrison Pit- Key stats: 10 sacks (second) 4 forced fumbles (second), and 67 tackles (21st).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC DT

1. Fred Robbins NYG
2. Mike Patterson Phi
3. Kevin Williams Min

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC DT

For DT I look for run-stuffing types, so I went to Football Outsiders to see which teams were best against the run.

1. Haloti Ngata Bal
2. Casey Hampton Pit
3. John Henderson Jax

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC DE

1. Jared Allen Min- Key stats: 12.5 sacks (first in NFC),  3 forced fumbles (tied for third), and 2 recoveries (tied for fourth)

2. Will Smith NO- Key stats: 10 sacks (second) and 3 forced fumbles (tied for third)

3. Trent Cole Phi- Key stats: 9.5 sacks (third) and 42 tackles (third)

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC DE

All stats are amongst DE.

1. Robert Mathis Ind- 9.5 sacks (second in AFC) and 5 forced fumbles (first).

2. Tamba Hali KC- 6.5 sacks (tied for sixth), 4 forced fumbles, and 51 total tackles (third)

3. Dwight Freeney Ind- 10.5 sacks (first)

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC OC

1. Ryan Kalil Car- The Panthers have had a solid running game all season, and run 52% of the time behind the center.

2. Andre Gurode Dal- The Cowboys run 52% of the time behind the center, and he's been good for a long time.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC OC

1. Kevin Mawae Ten- I considered other candidates, but then I saw that the Titans run 44% of the time behind the center.  Plus, he's a strong leader on a contending club.

2. Kyle Cook Cin- The Bengals have had three runners this season have 100 yard games, and they run 40% of the time behind the center.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC OG

1. Jahiri Evans NO- Surprisingly, the Saints are first in the NFC in adjusted yards, and are effective inside rushing.

2. Leonard Davis Dal- Another solid season, and the Cowboys are second in the NFC in adjusted yards.

3. Todd Herremans Phi- The Eagles offensive line showed vast improvement, once Herremans returned from injury.  Also the Birds are fourth in NFC in adjusted yards.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC OG

For the interior linemen, I focused on adjusted line yards.

1. Ben Gubbs Bal- The Ravens have the third highest adjusted line yards in the AFC, and he's the guy they run behind on short yardage situations.

2. Justin Smiley Mia- The Dolphins are second in adjusted line yards in the AFC, and have adjusted to an I-formation power running game following the injury to Ronnie Brown.

3. Chris Kuper Den- The Broncos are first in the league in adjusted line yards.  And they have two running backs that have had solid seasons.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC OT

1. David Diehl NYG- The Giants line has had its moments this season, but they're second in the NFC in adjusted sack rate, and Diehl's been solid protecting Eli Manning's blindside.

2. Jon Stinchcomb NO- The Saints have been excellent this season, and they're first in the NFC in adjusted sack rate.

3. Levi Brown Arz-  The Cardinals are third in the NFC in ajdusted sack rate, and Brown has been living up to his loft draft status.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC OT

Offensive Line is the hardest group to figure out who's deserving.  I went to football outsiders to check on stats for lineman.  For tackles, I focused on pass-protection, since it's that's why they're paid the mega-bucks.

1. Michael Roos Ten-  The Titans are third in the league in adjusted sack rate.  Center Kevin Mawae receives the press, but Roos is the man who protects Vince Young's blindside.

2. Ryan Clady Den-  The Broncos are fifth in the AFC in adjusted sack rate.  He's been a fixture on that line since Day One.

3. Ryan Diem Ind- The Colts are first in the league in adjusted sack rate, and Diem's had solid season protecting Peyton Manning's blindside.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC FB

1. Leonard Weaver Phi- This choice is a little out of the box, based on the run game, or at times, lack there of in Philadelphia.  The Eagles are fifth in the league in yards per carry, and Weaver has averaged 6 yards a carry and 9 yards a reception.  Plus, he's prone for the big play. (41 yard rush against the Giants and 59 yard reception against the Falcons.)

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC FB

1. Ahmad Hall Ten- There's a reason paving the way for Chris Johnson's monster season, and the Titans lead the AFC in yards per carry with a 5.2 average.

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC TE

All stats are strictly TE based.

1. Vernon Davis SF- What a bounce back year!  Coach Mike Singletary did a great job of getting him to reach his potential as the former sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft.  Key stats: 781 yards (first), 63 catches (third), and 12.4 yards per reception (second).

2. Jason Witten Dal- He's like a machine. Year in and year out, he just wears on secondaries.  Key stats 744 yards (second), 73 catches (first), and 10.2 yards per reception (11th).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC TE

All stats are strictly TE based.

1. Antonio Gates SD- Another brilliant season for the Chargers tight end.  Key stats: 994 yards receiving (first in AFC), 67 catches (second), and 14.8 yards per catch (second).

2. Dallas Clark Ind- Despite the fact he's a tight end, he's Peyton Manning's number two target, behind Reggie Wayne.  Key stats: 859 yards (second), 77 catches (first), and 11.2 yards per catch (seventh).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC WR

Stats are only WR based.  This is a tough group to choose from.  There are eight players deserving, and cutting it down to four was difficult.

1. Larry Fitzgerald Arz- Not as many big plays, but a consistent weapon, nonetheless.  Key stats: 969 receiving yards (third in NFC), 83 catches (first), and 11.7 yards per reception (32nd).

2. Marques Colston NO- He's the best receiver in a prolific offense.  Key stats: 854 yards (seventh), 50 catches (12th), and 17.1 yards per reception (sixth).

3. Roddy White Atl- The stud receiver that doesn't get that much publicity.  He's a tremendous player, especially with the game he had last week with Chris Redman at quarterback.  Key stats: 874 yards (sixth), 63 receptions (third), and 13.4 yards per reception (20th).

4. Sidney Rice Min- This last spot was a tough decision.  DeSean Jackson, Donald Driver, Miles Austin, and Steve Smith of the Giants were all worthy candidates.  I went with Rice, because his stats were the best.  Key stats: 1036 yards (first), 63 catches (tied for fourth), and 16.4 yards per reception (eighth).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC WR

All numbers are factoring WR's only.

1. Reggie Wayne, Ind- He's the best receiver in the game.  He runs all the routes and makes spectacular catches seem routine.  Key stats: 1035 receiving yards (fourth in AFC), 83 catches (second), and has 12.5 yards per reception average (25th).  His 63 first downs are first amongst AFC WR's.

2. Andre Johnson- Wayne's former University of Miami teammate.  Another superb season!  Key stats: 1044 yards (third), 70 catches (fourth), and 14.9 yards per reception (15th).

3. Randy Moss- Add this season to the list of Pro Bowls he'll be selected to following its conclusion.  Key stats: 1058 yards (first) 68 catches (sixth), and 15.6 yards per reception (11th).

4. Wes Welker- Imagine if he didn't miss two and a half games this season.  He could be challenging Marvin Harrison's single season receptions record.  Key stats: 1053 yards (second), 95 catches (first), and 11.1 yards per reception (31st).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC RB

1. Steven Jackson, St.L- He's been a beast this season, despite the lack of talent around him and opponents game-planning for him.  Key stats: 1232 rushing yards (first in NFC) and 4.6 yards per carry (sixth).

2. Adrian Peterson Min- In spite of his fumblitis, he's a spectacular player.  His running has paved the way for what could be Brett Favre's finest season yet.  Key stats: 1103 rushing yards (second) and 4.5 yards per carry (eighth).

3. DeAngelo Williams Car- His second consecutive monster season, even if he doesn't score 20 touchdowns this year.  Key stats: 1022 yards (third) and 5.2 yards per carry (second).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC RB

1. Chris Johnson, Ten- Monster year.  He deserves MVP consideration, as he has an outside possibility of breaking the NFL's single-season rushing record.  Key stats: 1509 rushing yards (first in AFC) and 6.2 yards per carry (first).

2. Maurice Jones-Drew, Jax-  His first season as the number one back for the Jaguars, and he hasn't disappointed.  Key stats: 1,077 rushing yards (second) and 4.6 yards per carry (seventh)

3. Thomas Jones, NYJ- It was between him, Cedric Benson, and Ray Rice for this selection.  However, he's been a workhorse all season, and had his roll increased, due to the season-ending injury to Leon Washington and the woes of Mark Sanchez.  Key stats: 1068 rushing yards (third) and 4.5 yards per carry (eighth).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- NFC QB

1. Drew Brees- If I had an MVP ballot, he would place second to Peyton Manning.  He's having a great season, and leading an undefeated season.  Key stats 111.3 rating (first in NFC), 9.02 yards per attempt (first), 69.1% completion rate (first).

2. Brett Favre- He barely makes second place.  His stats edge my third quarterback.  He's having a magnificent season.  Key stats: 108.5 rating (second), 7.81 yards per attempt (fifth), and 69% completion rate (second).

3. Aaron Rodgers- Still following Favre.  He's been a revelation this season.  Key stats: 103.3 rating (third), 8.09 yards per attempt (second), 65% completion rate (fifth).

My Pro Bowl Ballot- AFC QB

I'm going to unveil my ballot over the course of the next couple of days.  I'll start with AFC, and follow with the NFC at each position.  This entry is for AFC QB.

1. Peyton Manning, Ind- I've been fawning over his performance all season long.  He's led his team to an undefeated record thus far, and is my choice for MVP.  Some key stats: 101.9 rating (second in AFC), 8.01 yards per attempt (third in AFC), 70% completion percentage (first in AFC).

2. Philip Rivers, SD- Quietly he's had a solid season, on par with Manning's, and that's telling.  Key stats: 104.9 rating (first), 8.85 yards per attempt (first), and 64.7% (fifth).

3. Ben Roethlisberger Pit- He's the most surprising pick, but he's had a solid season, and the numbers back it up.  Key stats: 100.2 rating (third),  8.55 yards per attempt (second), and 69.3% (second).

Week 13 Game Review- Part 4

Green Bay's victory this evening salvaged double digits for Week 13 (10-6).  It was my only correct call with this grouping of games.

San Francisco at Seattle
The 49ers outplayed Seattle in this one.  They gained 60 more yards of offense, protected Alex Smith, and pressured Matt Hasselbeck with five sacks on eight hits.  The Seahawks did enough to win as they went 50% in the red zone, while holding San Francisco without a red zone touchdown, and were +1 in turnover differential.

Minnesota at Arizona
This was the first game this season where Brett Favre had one of those careless games, as he threw two key interceptions.  He also took three sacks on the night.  The Cardinals gained 80 more yards of offense and won the turnover battle.  However, they need to produce more in the red zone if they want to return to the Super Bowl, because 25% isn't going to cut it in the playoffs.

Baltimore at Green Bay
What a sloppy game!  300+ penalty yards!  Give Green Bay credit, because they dominated this one.  The Packers gained 160 more yards of offense, protected Aaron Rodgers, pressured Joe Flacco, and won the turnover battle.  Good night for the Packers.  Baltimore's playoff chances took a hit this evening.

Week 13 Game Review- Part 3

In this group, I missed Tampa Bay-Carolina and Houston-Jacksonville.  I'll review those games below.

Tampa Bay at Carolina
I predicted that Tampa Bay was going to upset in this game.  It was mainly due to Carolina starting Matt Moore and the injuries to their running backs.  DeAngelo Williams ended up not playing.  However, the Bucs didn't convert any touchdowns in four red zone trips and were -3 in turnover differential, despite gaining 160 more yards of offense.  Hopefully, this was just a hiccup type of game for Josh Freeman, because he has potential.

Houston at Jacksonville
Another game I missed.  Matt Schaub missing some time in this one hurt them.  Houston  did a good job at creating pressure and were 50% in the red zone, while holding the Jaguars at 33%.  Jacksonville won because they won the turnover battle three to one.

San Diego at Cleveland
San Diego definitely took their foot off the gas on this one.  They gained 100 more yards of offense, but allowed Cleveland back into the game.  The Browns were more effective in the red zone at 75%, while holding the Chargers at 33%, and were +1 in turnover differential.

Dallas at New York Giants
The numbers slanted into Dallas's favor in this one.  They were 67% in the red zone, had about 90 more yards of offense, were +1 in the turnover battle, and held the ball for 18 more minutes.  The Giants won, because they were able to capitalize on two 70+ yard plays; one on special teams, and the other on a dump off in the flat.  Nice bounce back game from Brandon Jacobs and the Giants as a team.

Week 13 Game Review- Part 2

I went two for four with this grouping of games.  The New England loss was not as shocking as the Pittsburgh loss, because Miami matches up well against them and has given them fits over the past couple of seasons.  I'll review both games further below.

Denver at Kansas City
This was Denver's second dominant game in a row.  They forced Kansas City to make a change at quarterback, not that Brodie Croyle was much better than Matt Cassel.  The Broncos went 67% in six opportunities in the red zone, while gaining nearly 200 more yards of offense, and held the ball for 12 more minutes.

New England at Miami
I teased this game at the top.  The numbers indicate that this game was indeed as close as the final score showed.  New England gained 30 more yards, but turnovers and red zone went in Miami's favor.  If the Patriots want to advance in the playoffs, they have to win the turnover battle and convert higher than 33% in the red zone.

Oakland at Pittsburgh
This was the game that shocked me this week.  I thought the Steelers would have dominated this game with the return of Ben Roethlisberger, and gashed the Raiders with Rashard Mendenhall.  The yards were even and Bruce Gradkowski took six hits.  Oakland won because they were perfect in the red zone, while holding Pittsburgh to 40%.  And they won the turnover battle.

New Orleans at Washington
Talk about an exciting game!  The yards were even.  Washington actually were more effective in the red zone, but three for seven against the Saints isn't good enough, even if their defense held them touchdownless in the red zone.  The story was the turnover battle.  New Orleans was +3 in that department, which directly effected the outcome of the game.

Week 13 Game Review- Part 1

Not a great week for me, in terms of upsets.  I went 9-6, thus far.  However, I nailed this batch of games.

Philadelphia at Atlanta
The Eagles dominated this game.  The perfect example of it is the red zone.  Both teams had a 50% conversion rate, but the Eagles had three times as many opportunities.  Philadelphia also had over 80 more yards of offense and were +3 in turnover differential.  Impressive game from Roddy White on the Atlanta side.

St. Louis at Chicago
Both teams were unable to move the ball too much on this one.  The Bears were much more effective in the red zone, hit Kyle Boller seven times, and were +1 in turnover differential.  Steven Jackson had another big game for naught.

Detroit at Cincinnati
Cincinnati should have won by a wider margin.  They held the ball for 18 more minutes, but went oh for two in the red zone, gained 80 more yards of offense, and went -1 in turnover differential.  The Bengals won because they hogged the ball, and were able to maintain pressure on  Matthew Stafford with eight hits.

Tennessee at Indianapolis
Another impressive win for the Colts.  The Titans have played so well since the insertion of Vince Young into the Tennessee lineup.  Indianapolis won because they went 75% in the red zone and went +1 in turnover differential.  Tennessee went 40% in the red zone in one more opportunity.  That was the difference in the ball game.
